NATIONAL
INFORMATICS CENTRE
Ø
In 1975 it was all a dream . A dream of weaving the entire
country into one single communication entity, of reaching out to the world through
communication systems which would know no barriers. It was with this vision of the future
that NATIONAL INFORMATICS CENTRE (NIC) was constituted in March 1975 and entrusted with
the responsibility of bringing about a revolution in work ethos through the propagation of
Information Technology (IT).
Ø
The beginning of 1988 saw the dream come true. NIC`s Satellite
base computer - communication network, NICNET went into operation. National Informatics
Centre is a premier organisation in the field of Information Technology (IT) in India It
provides state-of-art-solutions to information management and decision support
requirements of the Government and the Corporate sectors. The IT services provides by NIC
range from conducting feasibility studies for computerisation, designing, developing and
implementing computer-based information systems; to undertaking large turnkey projects.
The services provided by NIC include devlopment of application software, systems software,
database systems, distributed databasees, Networking, Electronic mail, EDI, Access to
International Databases, CAD, GIS, Modelling, Expert Systems, Telematics , Office
Automation Textbase Management System , Multi-Media system, Web site development and
hosting, Vedio conferencing and training.
NICNET
Ø
NICNET was designed and implemented by NIC using state-of-art
satellite-based computer-communication technology. Keeping in view the wide geographic
spread of the country, ranging from islands in Indian ocean to highest Himalayan ranges,
the design of NICNET, which is one of the largest VSAT networks of its kind in the world,
ensures extremely cost effective and reliable implementation
NICNET
Architecture
Ø
Access Technique:
It is based on the Spread Spectrum Multiple Access (SSMA) and Code
Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
Technology operating in the C-band.
Ø
Master Earth Station: (MES)
The Master Earth Station of NICNET uses
Equatorial MC-200, which provides two-way communication. In addition to the antenna, the
electronics includes certain RF & digital electronics equipment and packet switching
equipment. MES of NICNET has been installed at NIC, Hq. New Delhi.
Ø
Micro Earth Station/VSAT
The C-200 micro earth station transmits
at 1200 bps or at 9600 bps (C-250). It consists of two basic modules the antenna and the
controller. The user`s terminal equipment is connected to the controller by means of
RS-232C or RS422 cable. The newok follow X.25 protocols. At the micro earth station node a
PAD is availble to permit attachment of user terminals and computers.
NICNET INFO
HIGHWAY
Ø
NICNET info Highway, supports high speed communication, at 1
Mbps through SCPC data pipes, at each of the remote sites. It has the capacity to increase
the speeds at selected nodes upto 2 mbps without any major investment. Each remote station
uses a 1.8/2.4 meter antenna. In addition, the remote stations have the necessary
interfaces to support both synchronous and asynchronous circuits. Customers will be able
to directly dial into the system to access the services available and the network.
Protocol Support
Ø
NICNET Info High-way supports the following multiple standard
communication protocols:
Ø
-x.25, x.28, x.28 dial-up, x.75, TCP/IP, LAN-WAN gateway, SLIP,
PPP
How to Access info Highway
Ø
NICNET info Highway can be access through:
Dial-up lines
Leased Lines
C-200/C-250 VSAT of NICNET
Network Gateways to NICNET
NICNET Services:
Ø
NICNET, which presently has more than thousand Micro Earth
Stations in operation, serving the Central Government, State Government and other
government organizations, provides the following services.
Interactive Access
Remote database access
File Transfer facility
Electronic mail facility
Emergency Message Communication
International Remote Access
